The Oxford English Dictionary - relaunched

600,000 words … 3 million quotations … over 1000 years of English

December 2010 sees the launch of the new online edition of the Oxford English Dictionary (OED). The new site combines all the content of the OED with the ability to search, browse, and make connections across the dictionary’s 600,000 words and 3 million quotations in ways never before possible — opening up 1000 years of language for study, research, and enjoyment.

The OED is widely regarded as the accepted authority on the English language. It is an unsurpassed guide to the meaning, history, and pronunciation of 600,000 words — past and present — from across the English-speaking world.

Relaunched with new functionality, a new design, new words, and new revisions, the OED is now even better than before.

What is the difference between ODO (this site) and the OED?

There are many different types of English dictionary, which have different types of content and coverage and are designed to serve different needs and users. The OED and the dictionaries in ODO (this site) are themselves very different. While ODO focuses on the current language and practical usage, the OED shows how words and meanings have changed over time.
