(1858–1919), 26th president of the US 1901–09; nicknamed Teddy Roosevelt. He was responsible for initiating many antitrust laws, and he successfully engineered the US bid to build the Panama Canal (1904–14). He also negotiated the end of the Russo-Japanese War in 1905.
