  • (b.1931), South African clergyman; full name Desmond Mpilo Tutu. As General Secretary of the South African Council of Churches (1979–84) he became a leading voice in the struggle against apartheid. He was Archbishop of Cape Town 1986–96. Nobel Peace Prize (1984).
