Definition of Peshawar
  • the capital of North-West Frontier Province, in Pakistan; population 1,390,900 (est. 2009). Mentioned in early Sanskrit literature, it is one of Pakistan’s oldest cities. Under Sikh rule from 1834, it was occupied by the British between 1849 and 1947. Situated near the Khyber Pass on the border with Afghanistan, it is of strategic and military importance.
