Definition of Northwest Territories
  • a territory of northern Canada extending northwards from the 60th parallel and westwards from Hudson Bay to the Rocky Mountains; population 41,464 (2006); capital, Yellowknife. From 1670 the southern part of this territory was part of Rupert’s Land; the remainder was under nominal British rule until 1870, when both parts were ceded to Canada.
