  • (1840–1902), French novelist and critic; full name Émile Édouard Charles Antoine Zola. His series of 20 novels collectively entitled Les Rougon-Macquart (1871–93), including Nana (1880), Germinal (1885), and La Terre (1887), shows how human behavior is determined by environment and heredity.
