Definition of Whitman, Walt
  • (1819–92), US poet. In 1855, he published a free verse collection, Leaves of Grass, that includes “I Sing the Body Electric” and “Song of Myself”; eight further editions followed during Whitman’s lifetime. Other notable works: Drum-Taps (1865) and Sequel to Drum-Taps (1865).
