Definition of Wharton, Edith
(1862–1937), US novelist and short-story writer, resident of France from 1907; full name Edith Newbold Wharton. Her novels are concerned with the conflict between social and individual fulfillment. They include Ethan Frome (1911) and The Age of Innocence (1920), which won a Pulitzer Prize.
