Definition of Tocqueville, Alexis de
(1805–59), French politician and historian; full name Alexis Charles Henri Maurice Clérel de Tocqueville. He is best known for his classic work of political analysis, Democracy in America (1835–40), which he wrote after a visit to the US to study the American penal system.
