Definition of Roosevelt, Franklin Delano
  • (1882–1945), 32nd president of the US 1933–45; known as FDR. His New Deal programs of the 1930s helped to lift the US out of the Great Depression, and he played an important part in Allied policy during World War II. A Democrat and a victim of polio, he was the only president to be elected to a third (and then a fourth) term in office.
