Definition of Remarque, Erich Maria
  • (1898–1970), US novelist, born in Germany. His first novel, All Quiet on the Western Front (1929; movie, 1930), was an international success. The book and its sequel, The Road Back (1931), were banned by the Nazis in 1933. All of his 10 novels deal with the horror of war and its aftermath.
