Definition of Powell, John Wesley
(1834–1902), US geologist and writer. He directed the US Geological Survey 1881–94. He also directed the Smithsonian Institution’s Bureau of American Ethnology 1879–1902. He wrote Report on the Lands of the Arid Region of the United States (1878).
