Definition of Owens, Jesse
  • (1913–80), US athlete; born James Cleveland Owens. In 1935, he equaled or broke six world records in forty-five minutes, and in 1936, he won four gold medals at the Olympic Games in Berlin. The success of Owens, a black man, in Berlin outraged Hitler.
