Definition of Mondale, Walter
  • (1928-), US vice president 1977–81; full name Walter Frederick Mondale; known as "Fritz." A Minnesota Democrat, he served in the US Senate 1964–76. He ran for the US vice presidency in 1980 and the US presidency in 1984, losing both times to the Republican Reagan-Bush ticket. He was US ambassador to Japan 1993–96.
