Definition of Mitford
  • family name of sisters Nancy Freeman (1904–73) and Jessica Lucy (1917–96), English writers. Nancy wrote comic novels, including Love in a Cold Climate (1949). Jessica became a US citizen in 1944 and is best known for her works on American culture, notably The American Way of Death (1963).
