- (1907–97), US writer; full name James Albert Michener. He wrote Tales of the South Pacific (1947), which was made into the Broadway musical South Pacific (1949). He was also known for other fictionalized histories that include Hawaii (1959), Chesapeake (1978), Texas (1985), Alaska (1988), and A Miracle in Seville (1995).
