  • (1809–47), German composer and pianist; full name Jakob Ludwig Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy. His romantic music is elegant, light, and melodically inventive. Notable works: Fingal’s Cave (1830–32), Elijah (1846), and eight volumes of Lieder ohne Worte (Songs Without Words) for piano.
