- (1930–98), English poet; full name Edward James Hughes. His vision of the natural world as a place of violence, terror, and beauty pervades his work. He served as Britain’s poet laureate 1984–98. Hughes was married to Sylvia Plath, a marriage he recounted in Birthday Letters (1998). Other notable works: The Hawk in the Rain (1957) and Crow (1970).
