  • (1911–93), English novelist; full name Sir William Gerald Golding. His first novel, Lord of the Flies (1954), told of boys stranded on a desert island who revert to savagery. Other notable works: Rites of Passage (1980) and Fire Down Below (1989). Nobel Prize for Literature (1983).
