Definition of Brooks, Cleanth
  • (1906–94), US teacher and critic. A leading proponent of the New Criticism movement, he edited The Southern Review 1935–42 and taught at Yale University 1947–75. Notable works: Modern Poetry and Tradition (1939) and The Well-Wrought Urn (1947).
