  • a landlocked country in central Africa, divided from Zimbabwe by the Zambezi River; population 11,862,700 (est. 2009); languages, English (official), various Bantu languages; capital, Lusaka.

Formerly the British protectorate of Northern Rhodesia, Zambia became an independent republic within the Commonwealth in 1964, under Kenneth Kaunda (President 1964–91). Zambia’s economy was adversely affected by its involvement in the Zimbabwe independence struggle (1965–79)
