Definition of Wharton, Edith
  • (1862–1937), American novelist and short-story writer, resident in France from 1907; full name Edith Newbold Wharton. Her novels are concerned with the conflict between social and individual fulfilment. They include The Age of Innocence (1920), which won a Pulitzer Prize.
