Definition of Vine, Frederick John
(b.1939), English geologist. Vine and his colleague Drummond H. Matthews (1931–97) contributed to the theory of plate tectonics, showing that magnetic data from the earth’s crust under the Atlantic Ocean provided evidence for sea-floor spreading.
