Definition of Teresa of Ávila, St
(1515–82), Spanish Carmelite nun and mystic. She instituted the ‘discalced’ reform movement with St John of the Cross. Her writings include The Way of Perfection (1583) and The Interior Castle (1588). Feast day, 15 October.
