Definition of Tainan
  • a city on the SW coast of Taiwan; population 764,700 (est. 2007). Settled from mainland China in 1590, it is one of the oldest cities on the island and was its capital from 1684 until 1885, when it was replaced by Taipei. Its original name was Taiwan, the name later given to the whole island.
