Definition of Stuart, James
  • (1688–1766), son of James II (James VII of Scotland), pretender to the British throne; known as the Old Pretender; full name James Francis Edward Stuart. He arrived in Scotland too late to alter the outcome of the 1715 Jacobite uprising and left the leadership of the 1745-6 uprising to his son Charles Edward Stuart.
