  • (1811–96), American novelist; full name Harriet Elizabeth Beecher Stowe. She won fame with her anti-slavery novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin (1852), which strengthened the contemporary abolitionist cause with its descriptions of the sufferings caused by slavery.
