  • (1902–68), American novelist; full name John Ernst Steinbeck. His work, for example Of Mice and Men (1937) and The Grapes of Wrath (1939), is noted for its sympathetic and realistic portrayal of the migrant agricultural workers of California. Nobel Prize for Literature (1962).
