Definition of Schoenberg, Arnold
(1874–1951), Austrian-born American composer and music theorist. His major contribution to modernism was the development of atonality and serialism. He introduced atonality into his second string quartet (1907-8), while Serenade (1923) is the first example of the technique of serialism.
