- (1934–96), American astronomer; full name Carl Edward Sagan. Sagan showed that amino acids can be synthesized in an artificial primordial soup irradiated by ultraviolet light—a possible origin of life on the earth. He wrote several popular science books, and was co-producer of the television series Cosmos (1980).
