Definition of Sade, Comte de
  • (1740–1814), French writer and soldier; born Donatien Alphonse François de Sade; known as the Marquis de Sade. His career as a cavalry officer was interrupted by periods of imprisonment for cruelty and debauchery. While in prison he wrote a number of sexually explicit works, including Les 120 Journées de Sodome (1784) and Justine (1791).
