Definition of Polonnaruwa
  • a town in NE Sri Lanka; population 13,900 (est. 2009). Succeeding Anuradhapura in the 8th century as the capital of Ceylon, it became an important Buddhist centre in the 12th century. It was subsequently deserted until a modern town was built there in the 20th century.
