a mountain system of central Asia, centred in Tajikistan and extending into Kyrgyzstan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and western China. The highest peak in the Pamirs, Ismail Samani Peak in Tajikistan, rises to 7,495 m (24,590 ft).
