Definition of Ostwald, Friedrich Wilhelm
(1853–1932), German physical chemist. He established physical chemistry as a separate discipline and contributed to pioneering work on catalysis, chemical affinities, and the development of a new quantitative colour theory. Nobel Prize for Chemistry (1909).
