Definition of Nuffield, 1st Viscount
  • (1877–1963), British motor manufacturer and philanthropist; born William Richard Morris. After working as a mechanic on bicycles and motorcycles he opened the first Morris automobile factory in Oxford in 1912. He endowed Nuffield College, Oxford (1937) and created the Nuffield Foundation (1943) for medical, social, and scientific research.
