Definition of Mesmer, Franz Anton
(1734–1815), Austrian physician. Mesmer is chiefly remembered for introducing a therapeutic technique involving hypnotism; it was bound up with his ideas about ‘animal magnetism’, however, and steeped in sensationalism.
