Definition of Massachusetts
a state in the north-eastern US, on the Atlantic coast; population 6,497,967 (est. 2008); capital, Boston. Settled by the Pilgrim Fathers in 1620, it was a centre of resistance to the British before becoming one of the original thirteen states of the Union (1788).
