  • a country of south central Africa, in the Great Rift Valley; population 15,028,800 (est. 2009); official languages, English and Nyanja; capital, Lilongwe.

As Nyasaland Malawi was a British protectorate from 1891, and from 1953 to 1963 was a part of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland. It became an independent Commonwealth state under Hastings Banda in 1964 and a republic in 1966
