Definition of Mahabharata
  • one of the two great Sanskrit epics of the Hindus, existing in its present form since circa 400 ad. It describes the civil war waged between the five Pandava brothers and their one hundred stepbrothers at Kuruksetra near modern Delhi.

Origin:

Sanskrit, literally 'great Bharata', i.e. the great epic of the Bharata dynasty
