Definition of Lafayette, Marquis de
(1757–1834), French soldier and statesman; born Marie Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier. He fought alongside the American colonists in the War of Independence and commanded the National Guard (1789–91) in the French Revolution.
