Definition of Korea
  • a region of East Asia forming a peninsula between the Sea of Japan (East Sea) and the Yellow Sea, now divided into the countries of North Korea and South Korea.

The first Korean state was established in the 1st century ad, and Korea was unified under the Silla dynasty in the 7th century. The country was ruled by the Joseon dynasty from the 14th century until its annexation by Japan in 1910. Following the Japanese surrender at the end of the Second World War, Korea was partitioned along the 38th parallel in 1948
