  • (1909–2003), Turkish-born American film and theatre director; born Elia Kazanjoglous. In 1947 he co-founded the Actors' Studio in New York City, one of the leading centres of method acting. Kazan directed A Streetcar Named Desire on stage (1947) and then on film (1951). Other notable films: On the Waterfront (1954) and East of Eden (1955).
