  • (1883–1964), Austrian-born American physicist; born Victor Franz Hess. He showed that some ionizing radiation (later termed cosmic rays) was extraterrestrial in origin but did not come from the sun. Nobel Prize for Physics (1936, shared with Carl David Anderson).
