Definition of Helmholtz, Hermann von
(1821–94), German physiologist and physicist; full name Hermann Ludwig Ferdinand von Helmholtz. He formulated the principle of the conservation of energy in 1847. Other achievements include his studies in sense perception, hydrodynamics, and non-Euclidean geometry.
