- (1907–84), American dramatist; full name Lillian Florence Hellman. Her plays, such as The Children’s Hour (1934) and The Little Foxes (1939), often reflected her socialist and feminist concerns. She lived with the detective-story writer Dashiell Hammett, and both were blacklisted during the McCarthy era.
