- a state of the US comprising a group of over twenty islands in the North Pacific; capital, Honolulu (on Oahu); population 1,288,198 (est. 2008). First settled by Polynesians, Hawaii was visited by Captain James Cook in 1778. It was annexed by the US in 1898 and became the 50th state in 1959. Former name Sandwich Islands.
