Definition of Gould, Jay
  • (1836–92), US financier; full name Jason Gould. With James Fisk and Daniel Drew 1797–1879, he gained control of the Erie Railroad in 1868 through stock manipulation. With Fisk, he attempted to corner the gold market, an effort that created the Black Friday panic on September 24, 1869.
