Definition of Gluck, Christoph Willibald von
(1714–87), German composer. Gluck is noted for operas in which he sought a balance of music and drama and reduced the emphasis on the star singer. Examples are Orfeo ed Euridice (1762) and Iphigénie en Aulide (1774).
