Definition of Gibbs, James
(1682–1754), Scottish architect. He developed Wren’s ideas for London’s city churches, notably at St Martin’s-in-the-Fields (1722-6); his best-known secular building is the Radcliffe Camera in Oxford (completed 1737–48), which he developed from earlier designs by Hawksmoor.
