Definition of Foster, Stephen
  • (1826–64), American composer; full name Stephen Collins Foster. He wrote more than 200 songs and, though a Northerner, was best known for songs which captured the Southern plantation spirit, such as ‘Oh! Susannah’ (1848) and ‘Camptown Races’ (1850).
